White Rabbit, Red Rabbit

Watching a stripped back show with an actor or actress who has never read the script before, requiring the help of the audience to keep the pace of the play going makes for a surprisingly enriching experience.

Overview

When I entered the room for Red Rabbit, White Rabbit, I had no idea what was about to happen. I had a hard enough time trying to say the name correctly (try it, I bet your tongue gets tied too) and my mind wasn't focused on what would unfold. I'm glad it happened that way. This is a tricky review to do because I don't want to give away the story. In fact, it's one of those nights where the less you know the better.

There are a heap of famous faces associated with this show, and each are the star on a different night. I saw Stephen Lovatt and I must say he did a fantastic job. He came in and out of character (always an entertaining experience when the actor comes 'out' of character to be themselves on stage) to answer (and talk back) to the audience at times. It was hilarious. This show really takes audience participation to the next level, but not in an awkward "oh no I'm being spanked on stage with a riding whip in front of my new work colleagues" kind of way.

The way the play is set up forces you to really pay attention, to remember your number (you'll know what that means after you see it) and it makes you challenge your own ideas of will and submission. No, there are no 50 Shades of Grey moments, this show doesn't need the bells and whistles. It's fantastic on it's own.

Watching a stripped back show with an actor or actress who has never read the script before, requiring the help of the audience to keep the pace of the play going makes for a surprisingly enriching experience. So without telling you anything really about it, I can say it's honesty really funny, catches you off guard and makes for a bloody great night out. And for 20 bucks, what else could you ask for?
