White/Other

Prepare to question everything.

Overview

What does it mean to embody both whiteness and otherness? Maybe it's a question that's never even crossed your mind, perhaps it plagues your every interaction. Either way, there is no doubt that for a large number of New Zealanders, the delicate balancing of dual identities is just a part of life.

White/Other is the solo show from award-winning Pākehā/Chinese theatre-maker Alice Canton, that has been six months in the making. It couldn't be more perfectly timed, if anything, with the current political climate this is a show we could have all benefited from seeing a very long time ago.

A combination of dance and projection, this wildly theatrical show aims to reclaim autonomy over who gets to tell Asian stories. Recognising that those desperate to tell their stories struggle to find a place to be seen, let alone heard, Canton is hosting a hui on April 16 to facilitate just that. The much-needed discussion on identity, race and the dominance of whiteness in society, will take place in a safe and welcoming environment. Be there, or continue to live in denial. The choice is yours.

White/Other will take you on a journey of self-discovery as Canton journeys into self-undiscovery. Prepare to question everything. Pay what you can afford, with prices starting at $10, the idea is that as many people as possible should have access to thought provoking shows such as this.
