Since launching nine years ago Brothers Beer has expanded across the city with locations in City Works Depot, Mount Eden, Ōrākei, Commercial Bay and Onehunga. Last month the team finally jumped across the bridge to open its sixth craft beer bar and barbecue restaurant on Auckland's North Shore.

The new Brothers Beer bar is located at 6 Rugby Road, Birkenhead in what was the former washhouse and storeroom for Hellaby's butchers. The 100-year-old space has been scrubbed back to life while its history and character have been retained by exposing timber beams and the original brickwork. Outside a new glass conservatory has been added to the venue, providing all-weather seating.

Brothers brings 15 taps of craft beer brewed at its main Mount Eden brewery, alongside a list of wine, cider, kombucha and cocktails. Sister establishment Juke Joint BBQ is there for some sustenance between drinks, too, serving up its reliable southern American-style cuisine.

Juke Joint's menu features its full range of low 'n' slow meats and vegetables served naked, or in a sourdough bun with coleslaw and a selection of house-made sauces. Specialities include the 14-hour-smoked beef brisket, spiced lamb shoulder, as well as smoked and fried chicken. Other popular items on the sharing menu include the beef brisket croquettes.

The bar and restaurant is family and dog-friendly and is open every Tuesday and Wednesday from 4–10pm, and from Thursday to Sunday from midday to 10pm.

Brothers Beer and Juke Joint BBQ are open now at 6 Rugby Road, Birkenhead. For more information, visit brothersbeer.co.nz.
