Overview
As they delivered their 100,000th lunch to a deserving child this week, Auckland-based organisation Eat My Lunch revealed that the next port of call to prosper from their good deeds will be the Capital.
The initiative was launched in June 2015 by Lisa King and award-winning chef Michael Meredith to help alleviate the issue of kids going to school every day without lunch - a staggering 29 percent of New Zealand kids currently live in poverty.
Eat My Lunch currently provides healthy lunches to children at 30 schools across Auckland. The service is run as a buy one, get one system; participants buy one lunch for themselves, and another one will be sent to a child who can’t afford their own. There are four items in every lunch, which target real food, less sugar, more vegetables and nothing in a packet.
As well as recently moving out of their household kitchen where they operated for the first six months, Eat My Lunch is now set to expand further around the country, with Wellington being the first stop.
Founder Lisa King says, “We have wanted to expand Eat My Lunch since day one and have received so many requests from Kiwis all around New Zealand to set up in their area. For us, Wellington is the next step where we can grow the business and have a Lower North Island hub that has the facilities to make both buy and give lunches.”
In addition to opening up in Wellington, Eat My Lunch will also be delivering to Hamilton and the wider Auckland area. A date is yet to be confirmed for the launch.
