Holm is K Road's New Café-Workspace Hybrid

A new multi-purpose space you can call holm, literally.

Karangahape Road's newest arrival, Holm, was started by good friends Cameron Thorp and Steffan Levet as a way to change the work-café culture and help people feel comfortable working in a public environment, where coffee is but a small step away.

"The way people work is changing and we want to offer a space that facilitates meaningful work. We want to bring together a community that creates cool stuff together and gets to know each other."

With assistance from their designer friend Leah Surynt and inspiration from their time in Stockholm, the pair, a photographer and software designer, set about creating a space that felt good to spend time in, hang with your mates in, and get work done in. "We wanted it to be quirky and creative, minimal and simple - not cluttered and busy like how most cafés feel."

The workspace has room for 16 semi-permanent residents on a month by month basis, with beautiful desks, an abundance of power outlets, super fast internet, a meeting room and free batch coffee each morning working itself into the $480 price tag. The pair also hope people will come in and work casually.

At the front of the space is the essential coffee engine room. Having spent a good chunk of time working at cafés, Thorp and Levet are passionate about the art of coffee and intend to push forward the culture rather than drag it backwards into the depths of a giant milky bowl. To do so, they're putting emphasis on filter, Chemex and espresso varieties with Red Rabbit being their main source of beans. And behind the machine you'll find JD Coulter as the head barista.

Eventually the space will offer sandwiches and fresh salads, with a few beers and wines making their way onto the menu as hours stretch into the evening.

Holm is open now at 295 K Road: 7.30am - 4pm Monday - Friday and 9am - 2pm on Saturdays. Visit holm.co.nz for more information.
