In a precinct-wide spruce-up earlier this year, Orakei Bay Village welcomed sophisticated eatery, The Barnacle. With backing from Brothers Beer, a menu curated by lauded hospitality folk and a $2 oyster happy hour, it seemed like the perfect recipe for success. Though, six months on and the venue has now been reborn as Orakei Bay Bistro.

Owner Anthony Browne says the change in direction came from "an understandable misconception that we were purely a seafood restaurant, which has never been the case."

In an effort to loosen up the seafood haters, the space now welcomes a more relaxed bistro vibe and casual menu. Executive chef Sara Simpson (Clooney, The Tasting Shed, Terroir) is still in charge of the menu and has held on to some favourites from The Barnacle, including the aforementioned oyster happy hour and beef carpaccio. New informal dining options include steak and chips, beer battered fish and five-spice brisket, while the dessert menu features innovative items like roast parsnip crème brûlée with maple ice cream and pancetta. The craft beer continues to flow courtesy of Brothers Beer next door.

To celebrate the rebrand, Orakei Bay Bistro will offer a free wine, beer or soft drink on arrival to diners throughout November.

Find Orakei Bay Bistro at 228 Orakei Road. It's open from 4pm Tuesday-Sunday and from 11am Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
