Overview

There's no white tablecloth of mystery shrouding the offerings of Sylvia Park's next new opening, Hawker & Roll. The "fast-casual" eatery from hospitality personalities Josh Emett and Fleur Caulton will take the popular menu item, best described as a pie-style taco (or piaco), from their Madam Woo brand and transform it into an entire sub-genre.

If you've ever had a "roti canai style" hawker roll from one of the five Madam Woo locations, you'll understand that they're the holy grail for the 'indecisive-shrugger-who-spends-far-too-long-contemplating-the-menu-at-every-restaurant-they-visit'. A visit to Woo will let you pair the moist and buttery roti with everything from pulled sticky pork, percik chicken and soy, sesame eggplant. The idea is to hold it like a taco and devour.

Hawker rolls will be just the beginning of the menu at Hawker & Roll. Emett and Caulton intend to adapt Malaysian-inspired street food into a format that will reach a broader audience. They'll attempt to do so by offering a variety of healthy sides and add-ons, as well as a selection of grab and go options for those in a rush — we're hanging out for the Malaysian spiced chicken wings. Staying true to that fast-casual theme, the Hawker & Roll will also offer a preorder system allowing diners to pick up orders via a takeaway hawker hole.

The space will be part of new restaurant precinct, The Grove, which is set to open at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre in December.
