A place for conversation.

Driving through a maze of large corporations, office buildings, and oversized warehouses you will find, on an unassuming corner, a café that funnily enough has a mindset far flung from the world of production and profit margins.

Opened in April, Black and Gold, is a café with a conscience, Supreme coffee, tasty food, and a fair bit of style. Open sunlit space, communal dining, furniture made from recycled crates and what look like old school seats make it not only a place to eat and drink but a place for conversation.

Owner’s Dave and Koyota have opened Black and Gold with a focus on two things: coffee and sustainability. The coffee is expertly brewed, and all leftover food is taken back to their Albany farm and fed to their Chickens or turned into compost for the vege garden. Although judging by the amount of food left on our plates the chooks may have been going a little hungry as of late.

If its breakfast you’re after its hard to go past the French toast ($15). Double-baked, with cinnamon banana crush, poached pear, and mascarpone, it melts in ze mouth. For those looking for something a little less extravagant in terms of sugary calories, there are plenty of other equally-tasty options like the pulled pork ragout ($18), which is as tasty as they come. It's still a big serving so skipping morning tea would be recommended.

A place with food, coffee and personality like this is something the workers of Rosedale have long been, um, starving for.
