Dr Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co.

If a sun-drenched rooftop bar and two lane bowling alley is what the doctor ordered.

Overview

There's a million and one bars to choose from down the Viaduct, so it's pretty hard for newbies to stand out above the rest. That's exactly what Dr Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co has done, both literally (it's on a frikkin rooftop) and metaphorically (it's awesome).

You'll find Rudi's above Danny Doolans, taking up a rather large space. There's a long hardwood bar along the side of the room, in front of several massive steel brew tanks, and next to a sun-drenched deck that goes on forever. There's seating galore inside, but you'll want to pull up a pew on that deck, soak in the sun, and enjoy the views over the marina and harbour.

If you're here to bend the elbow grab one of Dr Rudi's house beers — they're brewed with help from Sawmill and they're actually bloody good (unlike most house beers). The cocktails aren't bad either — our favourite was the espresso martini and the bourbon old fashioned also went down a treat.

The food is firmly in the realm of bar eats, but we're not complaining. We reckon the picks of the menu are the Jalapeno poppers stuffed with brie and battered in IPA ($15), and the lime, coconut and chilli ceviche tortillas ($18), which come served in a beautiful paua shell and tastes kind of like how summer feels.

Truth be told though, what really sets this place apart is the view, the fully functional two lane bowling alley out back (it's free) and the chilled but festive vibes (it was humming on the Tuesday night we visited). It's a sun-drenched rooftop environment purposed for relaxation, long liquid lunches and general good times. As summer finally rolls around, I decree there are few better ways to spend it than with your beverage of choice in hand on the deck at Rudi's.
