Overview
Gingerbirds is a dynamic little kitchen and cafe is hidden in plain sight in one of the quieter blocks of shops along Dominion Road. Although it turned five years old in May, you could be forgiven for missing this little cafe. However, it is perfectly located for any commuters traveling from Mount Eden or beyond, particularly if your hoping to pick yourself up some lunch on your way.
The coffee is good, with a talented barista working with Allpress beans. Organic Phenix drinks, Karma Kola and other cool sweet treats are available from the fridge. A variety of healthy smoothies are also on offer, which are made with an array of fresh fruits, vegetables and coconut milk.
The cafe offers a wide variety of affordable, healthy food to have in or take away. The food is straight forward and healthy, well made but without too many fancy ingredients and no boundary-pushing recipes. They make different salads every day which are light on the wallet with a snack size costing $5.40 up to a sharing size for $13.50, with plenty of options in between. They also have a different Paleo diet lunches available every day, with whole working week of Paleo lunches available for $60. Plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options are available too.
If you really love your Gingerbirds fare, you can also get them to cater at your next shindig or even buy their frozen meals to take home. Gingerbirds all day, err day.
The space doubles as an art gallery for Guy Harkness (the husband of the owner/ operator), so you might even pick up some artwork with your lunch. The ambience is pleasant, and although the space is a little bare, with stark white walls and plain tables and chairs - the starkness makes the food and the art the stars of the site.
