Overview

Hidden in the industrial backstreets of Newmarket, Little and Friday provides a spark of originality and an internal haven of culinary delight in a street that can really only be described as grey and drab.  Everything from a delicious menu through to their interior and décor, Little and Friday takes the humble and makes it sensational.

The large open tables combined with the fact that it is an adjunct to a large fabric warehouse allow the café to feel large while being small. And this means that if you happen to be dining alone you don’t have to be the strange single at the table in the corner.  The activity of each business provides a touch of difference and excitement to the other, converting what would otherwise be a fairly standard eating or retail set up into something fresh and exciting.

Given that the underlying reason for being there was the worthy search for Auckland’s best pie, I opted for the classic mince and cheese.  All I can say is that I have often wondered who decided that mince should be subjected to the title of cheap and nasty or quick and boring when so many good foods utilise it. Little and Friday have provided me with undeniable ammunition to my argument that mince can be a delicacy.  Perfectly crisp, thin and light, melt in your mouth pastry, a proper thick meat and a layer of sliced cheese with a proper kick.  A humble meat pie in all its perfect simplicity; it was glorious.

Little and Friday specialize in pastry cuisine and as well as your mince, steak, bacon and egg and chicken covered pies offer an assortment of savory open-pastry treats from feta and oven roasted tomato to asparagus and proscuitto.  They also have a selection of rolls on offer or If you are in more of a sweet mood there is an abundance of pastries and gateaux’s to choose from.

If you are trying to find a place to escape from the confines of the office or the hustle and bustle of the shopping mall, or you simply love good food, nice coffee and a place to chat with friends, read or watch the world go by Little and Friday is waiting for you.
