Pastamago Cafe & Bistro - CLOSED
Build-your-own pasta and fried rice is changing the lunch game in the inner city.
Overview
In the heart of the dining precinct in Sky World at the top of Queen Street is a new build-your-own pasta and omelette outpost. With filling portions and easy-on-the-wallet combo deals, it's a delicious destination for students and city slickers alike. Pastamago's name derives from 'pasta' and 'tamago' (the Japanese word for egg) and champions exactly that.
Pastamago's natural fit-out reflects its informal menu, with clean wood and white accents throughout the ample space perfect for both groups and solo lunch goers.
The hero of the menu is the DIY pasta and omurice, a Japanese dish consisting of omelette atop ketchup fried rice. The base starts from $11, which includes one of the two, along with one of three sauces — tomato, teriyaki or mentaiko sauce. From there, you can choose from a variety of toppings made fresh in-house every morning ranging from $1 to $3. From the classic poached egg and sautéed mushroom to deep fried prawn and rib eye steak, it's a choose-your-own-adventure in its most delicious form.
For any carbonara lovers, the most popular mentaiko sauce — spicy cod roe — is not to be missed. Often served as a topping on rice in Japan, the saltiness and slight kick of the mentaiko is combined with the richness cream, making for a great complement to both pasta and egg.
Along with the DIY pasta and omurice, Pastamago has a range of rotating specials including Japanese curry and hamburg (Japanese beef patty). If you're looking for a lunch-to-go, the cabinet is well-stocked with a variety of house-made salads, wraps, and sandwiches.
Make sure you bring another carb and caffeine loving friend to Pastamago. For $24, you can get two main DIY dishes and two expertly-made coffees — guaranteed to keep you full and fuelled for the rest of the day.
