Phat Philly's
Cheese. Steak. Bread. Yum.
Overview
Whether you're looking for a late-night bite, a pre-game fuel up or just a mid-week treat, a new Morningside spot is serving up delicious combinations of hot meat, cheese and bread to get you through.
Phat Philly's is a brand new grab-and-go eatery in the Morningside precinct, sitting alongside other hotspots like Morningcider, the Morningside Tavern, Kind and Crave Cafe. The offering? Authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, sure to impress even the most ardent US ex-pats.
For the uninitiated, a Philly cheesesteak is a sandwich made from thinly sliced beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll. And yes, as you probably picked up by the name, it originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The small but perfectly formed menu offers a few different options for sandwich lovers. The Full Phat ($16) is Phat Philly's signature offering: a heady (and halal) mix of steak, hot cheese and onion. Vego? No worries. The mushroom-based Good Phat ($16) is its vegetarian sidekick. Sides include potato tots ($8) a variety of Phat chicken wings ($16), loaded cheese fries ($16), and sure, slaw ($6) if you want to feel healthy — and extra pots of dipping cheese ($8) if you really don't.
But our advice? Don't come with visions of health in mind. This is a place to eat dirty and deliciously — and given its adjacent position to the tavern and 550m stumble from Eden Park, we're sure that's exactly what all its patrons will be doing.
