Overview

If you've strolled along Ponsonby Road in the last couple of weeks and noticed hungry diners lining up for one particular spot, we can almost guarantee it's one of Auckland's hottest recent arrivals, Taco Medic.

The Taco Medic food truck was the country's first craft taqueria when it was founded by two Kiwi cousins in the back of a converted Mercedes Benz Sprinter back in 2015. In more recent years expanded into two brick and mortar stores in Queenstown, and has now settled in Tāmaki Makaurau at 130 Ponsonby Road.

These handcrafted tacos are made fresh daily and filled with delicious locally-sourced ingredients. The menu holds a little something for everyone. Those who think no meal is complete without several varieties of meat can try the 'Stockman' with its 12-hour slow-cooked beef brisket, and the pork belly-filled 'Bushman'. For those keen on fresh kaimoana, the seafood tacos include the 'Kōura', stuffed with chilli and lime marinated prawns, or the 'Bajaman', where the day's catch of fish is fried and battered. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available, including the 'Kaimanga', filled with a walnut and pepita fried culet.

Everything is already extremely reasonably priced, with the tacos normally sitting at $7 apiece, but get there on a Tuesday and you'll be able to nab one for only $5. And definitely pair your meal with one of their $12 frozen margaritas, which are lip-puckeringly sour. The best bit? Everything on the menu is entirely gluten-free, so rest assured coeliac souls you won't be scouring for that little menu symbol that says it's safe to eat.
