Deadly Ponies

Even better than a real pony: Deadly Ponies' flagship in Ponsonby.

Overview

For New Zealand lasses, getting your first Deadly Ponies handbag is kind of equivalent to your 21st birthday. Maybe not quite to the same extent, but the bag works as a symbol of maturity, class and sophistication. And regardless of whether you're fresh out of uni and have little to occupy the new bag other than some Blistex and your cracked iPhone, or whether you're jamming the bag full of clean diapers and dummies, Deadly Ponies makes women feel like we've got our shit together.

The new store on Ponsonby Road only adds to this feeling. For such an iconic and luxe label, their flagship is surprisingly pared back. Not abiding by the trend for minimalism, but rather more traditional and reflective of the company's roots. Creative Director Liam Bowden had the space transformed, courtesy of designer Katie Lockhart, from a former glass studio into an aesthetically raw, largely wooden interior enhanced by plinths that showcase the company's product. Katie's husband created the plinths by hand, or by chainsaw, and these totems are definitely the store stand-out.

The reason DP bags are so sought after might be the brand's reputation for quality and durability, or maybe more due to the timeless style each piece adds to any outfit. Regardless of your reason for attraction to the brand, once you've laid eyes and hands on the uncannily soft leather, you'll be sold. If you're in the market for a new bag, and aren't we all, then you can't look past Deadly Ponies and their flagship store. Even if you're not in the market for a new bag, chances are you'll leave the store with a new Pony anyway.
