Overview

Hidden away in a slightly derelict strip of shops in Albany is quite possibly one of the best gyms on the North Shore. Opened mid-2017, Epic Fit is a boutique gym which caters to those who want a slightly more personalised touch but not the price tag of attending regular personal training sessions. Classes are semi-private sessions of a maximum of six clients to a trainer and involve free weights, gravity suspension training, cycling, resistance training, mat work and a few other activities to get your heart beating faster while you burn some calories and build some muscles.

The benefits of a smaller class size also include Epic Fit's more tailored approach to their clients. The gym specifically caters for anyone with any particular sports injuries, disabilities or any kind of condition that requires a bit more of a personalised approach. Before starting your first class at Epic Fit, one of the instructors does a personal assessment of your fitness levels, movement patterns, weaknesses and strengths. The instructors use this information to keep a better eye on your during your sessions and help correct any imbalances you may have. Instructors also ask every client at the start of every session about any new aches or concerns they have to ensure that training doesn't aggravate those injuries. Full members are also provided with heart rate monitors to help measure their performance and gather important data for their regular feedback meetings with trainers.

Membership costs vary depending on the amount of group sessions you go to. For those looking to train on a weekly basis, membership is $97.50 per month (or $24.38 per week roughly), bi-weekly training costs $195 per month ($48.75 per week), three sessions a week costs $292.50 per month ($73.13 per week), four sessions a week sets you back $390 per month ($97.50 per week). Walk-in sessions cost $25 a pop. The gym also offers a 14 day free trial for potential gym goers to dip their toes in before making a full commitment.

Cheaper than personal training, but more expensive than your regular gym, Epic Fit fills a special niche for those wanting a personal touch and possibly wanting that extra bit of attention and care but who also don't want to fork out for a personal trainer. (Although you can also get personal training sessions at Epic, if you want.)
