Overview
Shipwreck is an umbrella term that can be divided into four more specific subcategories of nautical carnage. Flotsam and jetsam are two of those categories, and they also combine to make an incredibly fitting name for one of Ponsonby’s leading antique stores. Made up of what may be seem as wreckage to some, but by others restored treasures, the store is overflowing with second hand goods full of character.
Although the store is literally bursting at the seems with product, everything seems to be displayed carefully to the point where the museum ‘no touching’ rules implicitly apply. Amongst the pre-loved goods are a set of crayon-bright Jielde lamps that nod to both 1950’s French factory in style and Dr Seuss in colour. There is this sense of quirky humour that is apparent thanks to some of the rescued objects, like a mini caravan that is fully decked out on the inside, and a Hamburger Gourmet book, that provides readers with burger secrets. The best, and most notable, part about the shop though, might be the old rescued and restored photographs. You might think it is creepy to have others’ memories hanging around the place, but in Flotsam and Jetsam it is strangely comforting.
