Overview

A visit to Auckland's newest hair salon delivers effortless, beautiful and healthy locks. Walk into HIEM (meaning 'Hair Inspired by Everyday Minimalism' and 'home' in Icelandic) for your next appointment and walk away with a beautiful colour and cut that is natural, low key and easy to maintain.

Recently opening on Cross Street in the Iron Bank building, the clean and classic industrial hair salon was bought to life by Kurtis Counsell and Whitney Steven (of Hair Nerd), who brainstormed and designed everything from the logo to the furniture and layout. All that's presented is useful, essential and gives a relaxed, uncomplicated feel. A perfect addition to the building's urban loft-style premises.

Although HIEM is new on the scene, the pair already boasts a cult following, proving that they know how to deliver on their word. Whitney and Kurtis work seamlessly together as hair stylists and close friends who both genuinely care about their clients. When you visit HIEM you are warmly welcomed into the relaxed space which truly represents the pair's love of the minimalist look. They like to use O&M styling products that are environmentally friendly and cruelty-free. They also use an eco friendly New Zealand made product called Beauty Dust Co.

Whether you're after a quick blow dry or a flattering new cut and natural colour, or perhaps a well overdue hair treatment, Whitney and Kurtis will tailor what best suits your needs.

In addition to their salon work, Kurtis and Whitney regularly tend to brides, even travelling across seas (to the South Island, Australia, or further afield) to make house calls on the bride's special day.
