Learn the history of the mine and what became New Zealand’s worst mining disaster.
Overview
This historic site is well worth a visit to take in the surrounding natural beauty and learn about its fateful history. In 1896, 65 men and boys were killed by an explosion deep in the Brunner Mine site. The site has excellent information about the history of the mine and it's a poignant reminder of a past where people worked hard in difficult conditions with the hope of a better future. The walk around the site is fascinating and the bridge that spans the Grey River is a beauty.
