Overview

In the most exciting public transport news since councillors unanimously voted to allow household pets on the Auckland commute, Mayor Phil Goff has announced that bus, train and ferry rides will be free later this month.

The free day of public transport on Sunday, 23 June comes in celebration of 100 million trips taken in the past year. It's the first time the number has been achieved in Auckland since 1951, when trams were in their prime, trolley buses were popular and ferry numbers were high.

The public can travel for free on buses, trains and most ferries from the first service of the day (4.40am) to the last. On the day, customers will not need a paper ticket or AT HOP card. All station ticketing gates will be open, and you won't be required to tag on buses. All you have to do is turn up.

The promotion is not available on the airport Skybus and ferry services to and from Waiheke and Rangitoto Islands, among several other journeys. See the full list of available services here.
