Overview
Stretching for enlightenment one hour per week? That's nothing. Say namaste to six hours a day for ten days straight. That's exactly the premise of Jedi Fight Club — something you can experience right here in Auckland this November.
Created by American "yoga asana champion", Esak Garcia, the journey is based around a competitor training model and the philosophy that you have the power, or the Force, to change your mind and "accomplish miracles in your body and in your life". The method has produced eight world asana champions since its launch in 2006 and has been praised for provoking an extraordinarily deep connection between the breath and body. Sadly, the Star Wars and Fight Club brands aren't affiliated.
The Auckland version of Jedi Fight Club will take place from November 5 to 11 at Britomart's Hot Yoga Works — the studio who last month brought us a 22-hour Bikram marathon. USA Yoga President Garland Hume will be flying in to lead the ten-day stretch.
While we can only assume that what happens at Jedi Fight Club, stays at Jedi Fight Club, we can advise that during the ten-day retreat attendees will learn techniques to refine hot yoga postures, how to develop postures beyond perceived limits and nutritional recommendations. The schedule adds up to around 5-6 hours of yoga practice per day, with field trips and surprise activities to break things up. There will be slumber party-style accommodation for out-of-towners.
The method has been designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners, though it's suggested that willing participants should already be capable of practicing two hot yoga classes per day.
