The opening date for Britomart's new luxury hotel has been announced.
The Hotel Britomart will open on the corner of Gore and Galway Streets from 1 October, 2020 as the country's first 5 Green Star hotel. That certification marks a commitment to sustainability during the build and the use of eco-friendly materials. Once open, it will offer 99 guest rooms and five suites — three of which have lush sky gardens and front-row seats overlooking the Waitemata Harbour.
Cheshire Architects, who also master-planned the Britomart neighbourhood, looked after the new hotel both inside and out. The development of the striking brick-clad hotel included the restoration of two neighbouring heritage buildings and the creation of a pedestrian laneway that will lead from the hotel's main entrance through the Masonic Building to Customs Street.
Inside are "cocoon-like" rooms with timber-lined walls, tiled bathrooms and built-in sofas. Smaller touches include hand-made ceramics, bronze-and-paper table lamps and minibars full of locally sourced treats.
The property's ground floor will be home to new retail outlets and food and beverage offerings, including Kingi (short for kingfish), a new seafood-focused restaurant from Tom Hishon and Josh Helm of Orphans Kitchen. The restaurant will be located just steps from the hotel lobby on the ground floor of the heritage Masonic Building. It will be open for coffee in the morning and fuller plates during the evening. With Michael Meredith preparing to open a new restaurant in the precinct and an endless number of first-rate eateries in the area, guests will be spoiled for choice when dining out.
The Hotel Britomart will open at 29 Galway Street, Britomart on 1 October, 2020. For more information and to make a reservation, visit thehotelbritomart.com.
