Overview

The pirate ship may have completed its last creaky voyage, but there's still plenty of fun to be had at the end of the rainbow. In an effort to keep up with the times, the country's biggest theme park Rainbow's End has launched a new state-of-the-art gaming area.

Thrill-seekers who prefer their adventures in the digital world will be at home in Rainbow Playlab. The centre, which can be accessed without tickets to the main park, brings together virtual reality, escape rooms, e-sports, dodgem rides and arcade games.

The Timelord Traveller is a steampunk-themed escape room where participants work against the clock to solve riddles and crack codes. The experience is the first of several escape experiences to open in the centre and can be booked for up to eight people.

Individual headsets, vests and hand controls are supplied in Playlab's virtual reality area where four players can battle it out in snowball fights, team up in first person shooter games or commandeer a WWII U-boat.

Virtual sword fighting uses lightweight uses foam swords and chest plates with electronic scoring, while the e-sports arena features 20 gaming consoles with hundreds of unlocked games, including League of Legends, Fortnite and The Walking Dead. The consoles can be booked in 30, 50 and 110-minute sessions to play against gamers onsite or online.

Following the approach of your traditional theme park, the arcade features a series of coin and card-operated video, skill and ticket games from $1 per play, while the much-loved dodgems have been given a fresh lick of paint. The attraction is open for single rides.

Rainbow Playlab is open seven days from 12–7pm. Entry to the centre is free, with games and experiences priced individually.
