The Five Best Mulled Wines in Auckland

More than just Shiraz in a microwave.

As discovered, throwing together a batch of mulled wine is a tad more difficult than just popping a box of Shiraz in the microwave. A good mixologist would tell you that the winter warming drink needs to be brewed at the optimum temperature not to burn off the alcohol, and at the precise length of time to infuse the herbs and spices. To save the hassle, I took it in my stride to find some of the best mulled wines available across the city.

The Wine Cellar

There's a reason they quietly call it "the best mulled wine in Auckland." Though we're just not quite sure what their secret is. The K'Rd bar gets a good amount of their wine and cider from the family-run Purangi Winery in the Coromandel. Could this be it? Or perhaps the rumours of human tears? The bar staff will never say.

Coco's Cantina

As you'd expect, Coco's mulled wine features all the good things that make up their all encompassing family vibe. A great beginning, end or accompaniment to their always impressive menu.

Golden Dawn

It's so good that on two separate occasions they'd run out. Luckily I can recall from previous experience that these guys definitely know how to whip up a fine brew. Best enjoyed underneath one of the many heaters or in front of the fire.

46 & York

The Parnell-based bar can be thanked for the feature image in this piece, as well as revealing the ingredients to their famous mulled wine. Cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, star anise, bay leaves, orange zest and...is that honey comb? If you can figure out how to make all those things into a drink then be our guest, but we suggest just letting them do the hard work.

Freida Margolas

Freida’s is the new kid on the block located in the old West Lynn butchery. Paired with the intimate space and welcoming decor, their mulled wine is a perfect match; and according to my accomplice, is the perfect temperature. They also do a Rum Hot Toddy for non-wine drinkers.
