With a contemporary Indian restaurant claiming Metro's supreme prize two years in a row it was only a matter of time before another establishment followed suit. While The Zing may not be cut from the same cloth as Cassia, the self-described 'fine Indian fusion' restaurant is still a far cry from Kiwi-style, road cone orange butter chicken.

Kingsland's newest opening can be found at 501 New North Road, the former home of classic curry-naan-rice joint, Little India. On the menu at The Zing you'll find items like cranberry and cheese koftas, lamb sliders, battered snapper with kerala coconut moilee, and pan seared scallops and prawns.

Owners Brijesh and Rakesh say the alternative approach is inspired by their hometown of Mumbai and they intend to fuse traditional flavours with modern techniques and style. To help them get there they've enlisted three chefs who come from both five star Indian dining experiences and local restaurants.

Those looking for a traditional fix will still find a range of curries on the lunch and takeaway menus, covering familiar territory like tikka masala, vindaloo and rogan josh. Then there's usual suspects like biryani, garlic naan and raita.

For those who came for a spice explosion, the Flaming Hot Zing Chicken will lead you in the right direction. The popular feature, or challenge, comes with a disclaimer that you should only order it if you have experience eating Indian extra hot. Completing the zingy meal will result in a place in the 'Hall of Flame' — a positive attraction for anyone with an iron belly.

Find The Zing at 501 New North Road, Kingsland.
