New Zealand Might Soon Be Home to a Massive Surf Park
US-based adventure developer Aventuur has secured the rights to develop a wave park in Auckland.
Kiwi surfers might soon be able to catch a few waves without even heading to the beach. As reported by NZHerald, US-based adventure developer Aventuur has secured the rights to develop a wave park in Auckland.
The purpose-built wave park will employ Wavegarden technology to generate man-made waves. The technology is already available in South Korea, Wales and Bristol, with the most recent surf park launching across the ditch last year in Melbourne.
The two-hectare Urbnsurf attraction can power up to 1000 waves, between 0.6 and 1.9 metres high, per hour and offers a range of options. Want to ride nothing but perfectly-formed right-handers for an hour? Or would you prefer a random selection, like what you'd experience in the ocean? You can take your pick.
According to Urbnsurf founder Andrew Ross, "every wave has six different take-off spots", which equates to 3600 surfable positions every hour. It can handle 90 surfers in the water at the same time.
Ross joined Aventuur earlier this year to work on new integrated surf park projects around the world and says the company is "committed to bringing a world-class facility to Auckland." Aventuur says it is currently in the process of securing an Auckland location for the surf park and it will likely be two to three years before it can pump out waves.
But Kiwis might not need to wait that long to ride man-made surf. Christchurch developer Select Contracts also has a multimillion-dollar adventure park in the pipeline featuring the Southern Hemisphere's longest dual zipline, an indoor surf simulator, lift-access mountain bike tracks and a gondola. The park is planned for Porirua's Te Rāhui o Rangituhi. Work was expected to start on the park this year.
