Forget about standing in the rain looking like a miserable drowned rat while trying to hail a taxi. A new taxi-hailing iPhone and android app called Zoomy's launched in Auckland this week, which means that you can hail a taxi while still comfortable perched inside a bar finishing off the last sip of your whisky.

The brilliant little app, which runs in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, finds riders' locations and then sends the closest taxi, meaning that taxi drivers aren't pushing 70 hour shifts waiting in taxi ranks, and you aren't waiting around for a taxi for a half hour.

Cooler still, once you have ordered your hackney carriage, you can watch it navigate the streets Pacman-style to your location - meaning that you only have to go outside when the taxi has actually arrived.

Since taxi drivers and passengers are linked digitally, the app is also a great way to improve safety - and if you ever forget something in the cab, Zoomy can help track down the cab and return your goods.

Also, there's no need to carry around cash or worry about those nasty add-on eftpos transaction fees, Zoomy has a one touch store credit card payment facility.

This week Zoomy's running a Free Taxi Week, meaning that for those a little bit curious how this app works, you can hitch a ride for free (up to the value of $30) until the end of this week (Sunday 13th of April at midnight). Just download the app, enter the promo code FREE TAXI and you have yourself a free ride home.
