Uber Is Launching Its Dockless E-Bike Service in Auckland This Week
The pedal-assisted electric bikes will be the first of their kind in Auckland.
Aucklanders already have plenty of choice when it comes to dockless shared transport. Late last year, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport selected four operators to operate e-scooter businesses for the next six months. One of those happened to be the Uber-owned Jump, which this week is also rolling out its dockless electric bike sharing service.
The pedal-assisted electric bikes will be the first of their kind in Auckland — and from Wednesday, 19 February Aucklanders will be able to access a fleet of 655 bright red bikes.
The service is used via the bike and scooter mode in the Uber app where users can reserve their two-wheeler or scan them to unlock. Once accessed through the app, users are required to remove a built-in cable lock from the rear wheel before beginning their ride. The service costs $1 to unlock and 38 cents per minute.
Helmets are provided and each e-bike comes equipped with a front carrier basket and hands-free phone mount. Like any other pedal-assisted electric bike, the harder you pedal, the faster you go. Compared with other human-powered dockless bikes available in Auckland, Jump's bikes will allow users to ride uphill and make longer commutes without breaking a sweat.
To deploy the fleet across the city, Jump is partnering with Mercury who generates 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources.
