Overview

You might not think of Ireland as a renowned surf destination, but Mullaghmore Head (Mully to the locals) in Sligo on Ireland's northwest coast features some of the world's most intimidating waves.

Temperamental by nature, the so-called 'black swell' can rise to more than 18 metres between October and March, with professional surfers arriving in their droves to tackle the giant break.

While best left to the pros, the chance to watch from the clifftops is too good to miss.
