Kip&Co has opened its first-ever bricks-and-mortar store, taking over 142-144 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, as of Thursday, August 27. It's a milestone moment for a label that's spent 14 years selling its collision of prints and colour through more than 400 stockists and its own online store, but never from a shopfront of its own — until now.

Kip&Co launched in 2012, when sisters Kate Heppell and Hayley Pannekoecke and their friend Alex McCabe pooled $30,000 and a hunch that Australian bedrooms had gone beige for too long. Kate had spotted a brightly quilted bedspread on a trip to the US and couldn't find anything like it at home, so the trio built a bedding label around the gap.

Since then it's grown into a full lifestyle brand covering sleepwear, kitchenware, swimwear and homewares, with quilt cover sets from $219 and a stockist list that now runs to Kip&Co's own site, independent boutiques and David Jones — we've previously included the label in our best local bedding brands list.

Gertrude Street has spent the past few years turning into one of Fitzroy's more interesting retail strips, and Kip&Co's new store slots in among the neighbourhood's mix of independent fashion and design labels. The shop carries the brand's full range, from bedding and apparel through to its baby and pet lines, all wrapped in the loud, maximalist styling Kip&Co is known for.

Kip&Co's Gertrude Street store is open now at 142-144 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. Find the label's full range at kipandco.com.au.
