Daily Detours for the Week of November 20

In partnership with

Featuring Saturday morning Thai-inspired brekkie.

When your nine-to-five plays out like a well-oiled machine, it can sometimes feel like each week is a little same-same. But Melbourne is brimming with a fine bounty of things to experience and explore each and every day. So aside from casual laziness and a little lack of inspiration, there's really nothing stopping you from squeezing some adventure and spontaneity into your schedule.

We've teamed up with Mazda3 to help you celebrate the little things that bring a sense of adventure to life. Shake things up, as we give you seven different detours to take each week in Melbourne. From Monday to Sunday, enrich your everyday with one completely achievable activity that inspires you to take the scenic route as you go about your daily routine.

This week, fight Mondayitis at a trampoline playground, win big playing Mario Kart at Bosozoku and hit the planetarium for a night of films on the big dome. Plus, we've got your future detours sorted for the new few weeks here.

All require no more effort than a tiny break from the norm — what's your excuse for not trying them all?

    Mondayitis Trampoline Cure

If you’re a kidult at heart and remember the hours and hours spent jumping on the backyard trampoline doing sweet flips and tricks, this one is for you. Bounce is here to help you remember your anti-gravity days of youth and bounce away the sad reality of your nine to five. With over 100 springy trampolines, you can recreate aerial manoeuvres with some expansive new options like slam dunking, wall-running, jumping into a foam pit and static-electricity zapping your colleagues into submission (take that, Helen). You can get your bounce back at Bounce in Blackburn North, Glen Iris and Essendon Fields.

    Mario Kart and $1 Gyoza

If your parents did you a massive disservice and threw away your Nintendo 64, you can still enjoy the thrill of blue-shelling your friends just before the finish line at Bosozoku in South Yarra. To help you forget the horror of your boring Tuesday, don’t head home and turn on Netflix; instead, pretend you’re living in an adult playground like Tokyo and head to Bosozoku for Mario Kart battles and $1 pork gyoza (the hefty, saucy kind). If dumplings aren’t your thing, there’s also the colourful and weird burger menu to tickle your fancy. Tuesday, what Tuesday? Never happened.

Dinner then Evening Strolls on the Boardwalk

Melbourne has some amazing Italian restaurants, but the majority of them live on Lygon Street, in an exclusive clique. Across the river though, Cafe Di Stasio is the king of the green-white-red. It’s a traditional, old-school kinda place, with indulgent pastas and meaty mains. We recommend the seared tuna with fennel, capers and pancetta and the oven baked salad of goat’s cheese, tomato and basil for a good mix of indulgence and freshness. And if you have the stomach real estate, squeeze in the tiramisu. Once you’re satiated, take a digestive stroll down the St Kilda, and enjoy the late sunset on the boardwalk — and total lack of weekend crowds and screaming kiddies.

    CCP Salon 2017 Opening Night

Every year, photographers across the country vie for attention in the CCP Salon awards. Started 25 years ago to help showcase and encourage Australian photographers, the awards are completely open to all, so a wide and varied array of exhibitors are expected each year. This time around, they’re handing out over $20,000 worth of prizes (so you can expect some fierce competition). Opening night happens tonight at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Fitzroy, designed in 2005 by the iconic Sean Godsell. The warm and inviting function space alone is worth a trip, not to mention the photographic talents set to show.

    Planetarium Nights

Every Friday evening, once the planetarium’s usual working day is done, settle into one of the reclining chairs, look up at the 16-metre domed ceiling, listen to the 7.1 surround sound system and soak in the best the full-dome video projection system has to offer. Films include a journey through bright coral reefs in Coral Redkindling Venus, a peek into the cosmos thanks to Starlight and a symphonic combination of images and music in Chaos & Order. Alien invasions, dives through black holes and more are also on the Planetarium Nights bill, as is a What’s In The Sky Tonight tour through the night sky by Museums Victoria astronomer Dr Tanya Hill. The latter forms part of the 7.30pm session, which focuses on astronomy, while the 9pm timeslot is all about mind-bending blends of science and art.

    Thai-Inspired Breakfast

The breakfast menu at Magic Mountain Saloon sets it apart from other venues. The Thai-inspired breakfast menu is controversial, to say the least. Set your alarm clock early and make a date with a new way to do brekkie. You’ll be asked to extend your tastes beyond eggs and bacon to a range of fairly substantial Thai options, both sweet and savoury. If you’re feeling a little groggy, try the black sticky rice, strawberries, banana, coconut yoghurt and dried mango granola. And if you’re feeling brave, go for the coddled egg and chicken ball congee, a traditional Thai choice complete with a hint of chilli that leaves you with the feeling of goodness coursing through your veins.

Walking Tour of the CBD's Art Deco Buildings

The art deco architecture in Melbourne is world-class but often goes under-appreciated. If you’re keen to know more (and flex that cool knowledge on your next date), book in for an art deco tour of the CBD. Spend your Sunday morning learning about the 1934 building boom that transformed Melbourne from a grim, classical landscape into the vibrant series of weird facades that we love today. You’ll learn about the international influences which underpinned the art deco movement worldwide. It’s a walking tour, so be sure to wear your comfiest sneaks; your swankiest, most flamboyant art deco hat and bring a water bottle.
