We're all beautifully different and that's worth celebrating — so here's five Melbourne events that do just that.
Melbourne has always had a good idea of where it sits in the world. After recently claiming the title of 'Friendliest City in the World' — and one of the five best drinking cities too — it is unsurprisingly jam-packed with culture, great food, live entertainment and, of course, some of the finest people (all clothed in trademark black). This winter, Melbourne is really showing off with a rollicking lineup of standout events that celebrate its unique nature.
Delightfully, a lot of these events are encouraging you to do the same. From art-laden events across city streets at RISING to & Juliet — the musical about discovering who you are and then embracing it — there really is something for everyone. The city will be heaving with creative talents from across the globe, so we've found five of the very best just for you. If you are looking for a night out with friends or are looking to explore new things on your own, Melbourne is offering endless options for you to experience. Here are five events that celebrate our beautiful individuality.

The musical that everyone is talking about has hit our shores. Exclusive to Melbourne, this nine-time Tony-nominated show has everyone talking and dancing in the aisles. With music from pop producer Max Martin and written by the Emmy-winning writer of Schitt’s Creek, David West Read, you will feel invigorated and inspired when leaving the theatre.
Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, this show explores what could have happened to the tragic pair if their life wasn’t so tragic. It explores what is possible when you are given a second chance at life and what you find out about yourself along the way. Featuring an all-Australian and diverse cast this musical will put you on cloud nine, and let’s face it: that is where you deserve to be.

Melbourne celebrates its distinctness when RISING starts on Wednesday, June 7. Over 12 nights the city will transform into a hub of creative talent. Celebrating some of Australia’s finest artists and welcoming others from all over the globe.
Whether you’re into art, live music or food, the annual festival brings a spectacular range of free, pay-what-you-like and ticketed events that everyone — you and your pals, your parents or your kids — can enjoy. RISING is your chance to embrace the things that you love in the city you love. Embrace those things that make you distinct and treat yourself to experiences you have never seen before.

Australia’s largest and longest-running short film festival turns the spotlight to films by both emerging artists and accomplished and renowned industry professionals. This year, at the 39th St Kilda Film Festival, more than 100 films will be screened across the oceanside locale. And, for the first time, in South Melbourne too.
From conversation sessions with filmmakers and hands-on workshops to networking events, there’s more than just flicks here. So, awaken your inner critic and make the most of this incredible festival. In great news, there’s almost an equal split of female and male directors this year. This winter, make a date to head to the cinema in St Kilda.

If you want to release your inner wild child, head to Speakeasy Theatre on Flinders Street. With burlesque artists, comics and musicians taking their place in the spotlight from Thursday through Sunday, you’re all set to be mesmerised by talent — and will probably leave feeling a little cheeky.
All this fun is housed inside a historic building with maritime origins just back behind the banks of the Yarra. There are limited-time performances (like The Vaudeville Revue, pictured above) and one-off fundraisers, as well as regular shows like Comedy Untamed — the high-energy night dedicated to laughs and improv, with a weekly-changing roster of comedians. So, check out what’s on, grab your friends and enjoy a truly entertaining night out.

It’s bingo, but not as you know it. On the first Wednesday of every month, Wingo Bingo spectacularly takes over The Beast’s CBD spot. On Swanston Street, you are in for a night of all-out fun. Hosted by the fabulous Gloss, you are in for raunchy laughs, shimmering costumes and, of course, people shouting bingo!
And there’s food, too. At just $25 per person (with a two-person minimum), you’ll be feasting on the spot’s favoured Dorito-crusted chicken wings — and yes, there’s a vegan option — plus chippies and a booze-free bev. There are prizes to be won as well, party people — so grab your gang, wear something glittery and strap on those heels for a night out where the name of the game is shameless fun.
‘& Juliet’ is the spectacular musical celebrating individuality and taking over Regent Theatre until Saturday, July 29. To nab your tickets, head to the website.
