If the line at Happyfield is looking particularly ambitious, walk two doors down to Happy Shop. The takeaway-focused spin-off from the team behind the much-loved Five Dock cafe takes the same American diner inspiration and turns it into something quicker and more casual. The room has a retro drive-in look, with order windows, bench seating, a shiny stainless-steel counter and drinks on tap. The menu swaps Happyfield's famous pancakes for things designed to eat on the go, including hefty breakfast muffins, stacked burgers, the Big Happy, and a chopped cheese with mince, pastrami, American cheddar, lettuce, and mayo on a sesame roll. There's even a self-serve drinks station with house lemonade and soft drinks. The other reason to join the queue is the New Orleans-style beignets. They're soft, pillowy, and dusted with sugar. And if you're not a morning person, Happy Shop now does Friday and Saturday night sessions until 9pm.
