Aside from scrabble and ironic croquet, is soccer the most art-world-approved of sports? Not only have my otherwise lit-minded friends abandoned theatre halls and small bars in favour of communal shivering (and vuvezelas, clearly just because they sound rude) in front of big screens at Darling Harbour, but Nike are running a cinematic, zeitgeist-tapping viral ad campaign, a small part of which has included commissioning this limited edition series of hand-carved Crayola crayons from artist Diem Chau. Each original Crayola colour, in metallic shades from Antique Brass to Timberwolf, has been carved into the likeness of a sponsored soccer star — namely, Fabio Cannavaro, Didier Drogba, Franck Ribery, Robinho, Cristiano Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney. It's a sight to behold, at once evoking nostalgia for my old box of Crayolas and jealousy at the 11 lucky people who received one of these rather nicer boxes in the mail. The project was dreamt up by advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy. More images can (and should) be viewed on Chau's blog. This post is just our humble contribution to the spectacular Nike-World Cup hype machine, apparently. Via Notcot.com.
