I've often considered techno to be somewhat of a dirty word thrown about to describe any old dance music or thumping beat complete with tacky laser light show. The Mad Racket crew have been busy re-educating us since 1998, hosting a stack of innovative international artists playing everything from deep house to techno and funk. Closing night at the Beck's Festival Bar promised big things with Detroit's Octave One taking to the stage for the first time in Australia, despite their extensive 20-year career making their own sounds and remixing the likes of Massive Attack. Resident racketeer Simon Caldwell warmed up the crowd for the phenomenal Burden brothers who brought the crowd to their feet as soon as they hit the stage. The Burden Brothers created a frenzy on stage mixing live sounds, pausing only to battle each other across the decks. It seemed as if they were enjoying themselves just as much as the crowd who had the dance floor vibrating dangerously under foot. It was a huge hour and a half set redefining my new favourite word. Long live Detroit techno. https://youtube.com/watch?v=mVgpghERC8Y
