Last Friday, I shared five of my ten favourites for the NEXT BIG THING in local(ish) music: artists that, at the very least, you'll be hearing a lot more from in the coming months. Today, I'm sharing the final five. If you wish, before checking out these fine ditties, check out last week's. Otherwise, enjoy! Rapids (Sydney) https://youtube.com/watch?v=xSngkAGRZvw I was unable to glean much about Rapids other than that they are a four-piece from Sydney who have played the Oxford Art Factory a lot and can boast Angus McClaren (Packed to the Rafters) as their drummer. Besides, the clip for 'Get Better Than That' tells you more about this band in 3 minutes and 3 seconds than any bio could: it's irreverent, sneering at affect and yet still self-aware enough to seem affected. Confused? I recommend watching. Oooh, and it's catchy! Rapids play Spectrum on October 29th. Alpine (Melbourne) https://youtube.com/watch?v=7fzS6MNIcGs Alpine are a recent signing to Ivy League (Catcall, Cloud Control and Cabins are label mates). The Star Slinger remix of their track 'Iceypoles' made it into Pitchfork's Forkast, and Triple J are IN LOVE with them. Hype band? Maybe. Good anyway? Definitely. Alpine will play The Civic with Catcall and World's End Press on October 9. Guineafowl (Sydney) https://youtube.com/watch?v=k1U6I9t0_Vg If you pay any attention to Sydney's indie scene, you will doubtless have seen Guineafowl play (or at the very least seen their name) of late. On record, Guineafowl's songs occupy a tense space between the melancholy and the celebratory. Live they're one of the most compelling local bands I've seen in the last year. Also, their lead singer (also known as Guineafowl) is a stone-cold pop icon waiting to happen. Guineafowl are playing a WHOLE bunch of shows between now and December. Check their Myspace for details. Street Chant (Auckland) https://youtube.com/watch?v=wkUUR9lE998 When I was 18, I was too sensible (read: boring) to do the whole party-til-your-jeans-fall-off, sweaty, spit-swapping, dexie joyride thing. Street Chant make me wish I had not been so sensible. With youth there comes a license to be dumb that has definitely worn off by the time you're 26. This is why it is truly wonderful that listening to 'Scream Walk' makes me feel like I could get away with being irresponsible now. Street Chants debut, Means, was released in August. Oh Ye Denver Birds (Brisbane) https://youtube.com/watch?v=Qk8jmgFO2Ds To shamelessly ape Richard Kingsmill, Oh Ye Denver Birds should be from Brooklyn, not Brisbane. 'Walls' feels like Animal Collective (circa Sung Tongs) mated with Funeral-era Arcade Fire, but not in a 'feels like you're listening to a bastard spawn of everything indie covers band' way. It's panoramic and at the same time delicate. Also, the video is HEARTBREAKING. You can download 'Walls' for free from oh Ye Denver Birds' Myspace.
