Spring has sprung: the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and mating right outside your office window when you're trying to concentrate on a spreadsheet. It's time to fling off the knitwear and thermals and explore Sydney in the sun. Concrete Playground has collaborated with some of Sydney's favourite bloggers to bring you the best picks of what our city has to offer in music, art, food, film and fashion this spring, as they describe their ideal spring weekend in Sydney. Part Seven: Cate and Nick Gilpin from Wrinkle-Free Rovers About four and a half months ago we became Wrinkle-Free Rovers. We left our ‘normal’ lives in Brisbane and headed off to roam the country for as long as desirable. Two months into the adventure, though, and Sydney had sucked us in, luring us with her sparkly, diamond, shimmering web of delicious eating, abounding creativity, beautiful loved ones, and top-notch work opportunities! So, until we can permanently hit the wide-open road again, we have ‘made do’ with Sydney life, and getaways to nearby wonders. On one such jaunt we found ourselves having the ultimate spring weekend very close to Sydney. We have recounted our adventure below for your replication. Friday arvo we took an early mark and raced out of the city towards those gorgeous mountains of blue, only 40 minutes away from the big smoke. We parked our van in a cosy spot in Katoomba for the night, and headed out looking for a bowl of something comforting. We found ourselves on the main drag eating the best Italian food of our lives at Gustissimo. The salad alone is worthy of four pages of text. Oh, and then there’s the pasta... After a deep and dreamy sleep, cuddled up against the fresh spring mountain air, we went to discover the town and found ourselves once again enjoying local tasty treats. Breakfast was cinnamon waffles and creamy lattes at True to the Bean. Be warned — there is no combination like hot coffee and warm waffles coated in cinnamon on a cool spring morning. You will eat more than one, or five. Following the injection of sugar and caffeine we pushed on with the day, seeking a bit of natural wonder at the Three Sisters and walking the surrounding tracks. The sky was the most spectacular blue, emphasising the incredible landscape of this unique spot. In the afternoon we went hardcore bush camping next to the stunning Perry's Lookout, enjoying the view while sipping a few drops of delicious Blue Mountains wines. Sunday morning we slowly began to wind our way back to Sydney, but not before stopping for a spot of shopping and a tad more eating in Leura. A tiny little stall out the front of the CWA sold organic bananas, oranges, apples and avocados to fill our lunchboxes through the week, plus the most incredible bread ever baked. After an album-length drive home we found ourselves back in Sydney, and headed for a final treat catching up with friends at Pocket Bar in Darlinghurst just to cap off the perfect spring weekend.
