Overview

The weather is warming up, so you've probably begun making mental notes about all the outdoorsy activities you need to check off in the months ahead. Well, you can cross off surfing early doors, as URBNSURF Melbourne celebrates the return of sunny days with its four-day Spring Opening Party from Thursday, September 17–Sunday, September 20.

Brimming with surfing, live music, famous faces and family fun, each day of the event brings a new experience. Ready to dive in? The first night presents Boogie Nights, where the waves in the lagoon are dialled up to their heaviest barrel setting for an event built entirely around the bodyboarding community.

The social vibe continues on Friday, September 18, headlined by a special edition of Girls Go URBNSURF. All abilities are welcome to catch a wave during this night session, with in-water photographers snapping the action. Afterwards, head to Three Blue Ducks — the surfside all-day restaurant — for a complimentary drink and hang out.

Then, on Saturday, September 19, it's the kids' turn. That means half-price surfing for groms, who are also welcome to sign up for the Groms Comp, open across under 10, under 13 and under 16 categories. Meanwhile, guests can paddle out alongside musician and keen surfer Tash Sultana, Richmond FC's Nick Vlastuin, Western Bulldogs star Cody Weightman and former Adelaide Crows captain Rory Sloane, with a Q&A to follow.

Rounding out this four-day experience, Sunday, September 20, is conceived as family day. Half-price surfing returns for under-16s, with lessons and activities for first-timers through to those who can't seem to stay out of the waves. What's more, the entire weekend also raises funds for SurfAid's Make A Wave campaign, a 30-day effort to support people in remote coastal communities.

"Spring is one of the best times to get back in the water, so we wanted to give people a reason to grab their friends or family and make a day of it," says Shaun Hutchinson, Chief Operating Officer at URBNSURF. "Whether you've never surfed before, have a surf-mad kid at home or want the chance to paddle out alongside some incredible surfers and sporting legends, there's something happening across the four days."
