Overview

The Human Rights Arts and Film Festival is currently in full swing, with a program packed with stellar documentaries about issues of global importance. We've already weighed in with our picks of the litter, highlighting films about everything from poverty to political corruption. But if you'll indulge us, we'd like to submit one more entry for you to consider: a critically acclaimed portrait of the European refugee crisis that is being presented at the festival with live musical accompaniment.

Nominated for Best Documentary at this year's Academy Awards, Fire at Sea takes place on a small island off the coast of Italy, one that has become a refuge for thousands of displaced people attempting to reach mainland Europe. The film will screen at ACMI on Thursday, May 11 complete with a live score performed by Evelyn Morris. She'll be joined by the band Music Yared, whose members will perform on traditional instruments from Ethiopia.
