Overview

The place movement holds in deaf culture — often used as a substitute for sound — will be the focus on a bold new dance work presented by KAGE and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

On stage at Chunky Move from May 31 until June 10, Out of Earshot is directed by KAGE artistic director Kate Denborough, who developed the show over two years in partnership with deaf dancer Anna Seymour. Along with a trio of hearing dancers, Seymour will explore the emotion and rhythm of non-verbal language, as she moves in tandem with a live drum score from acclaimed New Zealand percussionist Myele Manzanza.

"Being a jazz musician I'm always looking to find new sounds, textures and ideas in real time and in the moment," says Manzanza of the unique collaboration. "I'm excited by the new paths we are discovering when musicians and dancers work together to find a new shared language."
