Overview

Explore the piazzas of the Italian capital this summer, with the help of a newly-curated film program at ACMI. Screening throughout February, ROMA! The Screen Life of the Eternal City features 10 titles from the past six decades, including several films from some of Italy’s greatest auteurs. Between them, the movies capture the charm and changing face of one of the most cinematic cities in the world.

Indeed, Rome has provided the backdrop for no shortage of classic films. Take a Vespa ride with Katherine Hepburn in the quintessential Hollywood romance Roman Holiday, or wade into the Trevi Fountain with Marcello Mastroianni in Federico Fellini’s jaded masterpiece La Dolce Vita. Both films screen multiple times during the ROMA! retrospective, which kicks off on February 6.

Other standouts include Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Mamma Roma and Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’eclisse. There are also a number of more recent works on the program, such as last year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar winner The Great Beauty and the critically-acclaimed documentary Sacro GRA.
