Overview
The life and times of Joseph Merritt will play out on the Malthouse stage in Tom Wright's The Real and Imagined History of The Elephant Man.
Running from August 4–27, the new play tells the story of Merrick, a young man whose unique deformities made him a subject of fascination in late 19th century London. Having previously been brought to life on stage by the likes of Mark Hamill and David Bowie — and in film by John Hurt in a performance that scored him an Oscar nomination — here Merrick will be played by acclaimed local actor, dancer and filmmaker Daniel Monks in his Malthouse debut.
"Joseph Merrick has been a role that I have dreamt of playing for many years," said Monk. "As a young disabled person, Joseph and his story had a huge impact on me, as I know he has had on many others, and I feel honoured to be part of sharing his powerful story with new audiences."
