Overview
As the sun starts warming us up this Spring, Melbourne is set to welcome a warm, welcoming new Greek restaurant named after the ancient Greek god of the sun. Helios, a three-storey mega venue opening at 356 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, will span the full spectrum of Greek hospitality and marks the biggest project yet from the team behind the renowned Aegli restaurant in South Melbourne.
Chef Ioannis Kasidokostas and wife Maria Tsilfoglou have been quietly reshaping how Melbourne experiences Greek food, wine and hospitality, with their refined Greek restaurant that has earned a reputation as one of the best in Melbourne in the short time it's been open. With Helios, they intend to continue showcasing the breadth and sophistication of contemporary Greek cuisine and viticulture, which are often overlooked.
"Helios is the ancient Greek Titan god and personification of the sun who rides a four-horse fiery chariot across the sky from east to west daily/ Helios is for us a source of light. Light brings transparency, truth and a deeper understanding of our culture. You'll see more interesting things, more cultural dishes from different areas of Greece. People will have a wider view of what Greek food can be," says Kasidokostas.
The massive venue, with capacity for 250 people, is designed to be a multi-faceted space with private dining rooms, large function areas, and a vibrant atmosphere that transitions easily from day to night. A resident Athenian DJ will spin Greek classics, creating an energetic scene that invites guests to sample another Greek wine from the carefully curated list.
"We do what we do to leave our mark on the dining scene of Greek food, and more particularly cultural Greek food, in a fine dining restaurant. It's not just about opening another business; it's about sharing our culture," says Kasidokostas.
