South Melbourne Market is set to make a big environmental impact by phasing out a tiny bit of plastic. The bustling marketplace has announced the phase out of plastic soy sauce fish, turning the tide on single-use plastics.

While the South Melbourne Market may be home to some of Melbourne's freshest fish, it'll no longer be offering the plastic versions that accompany its sushi and seafood. The phase-out has been rolled out across the market's three popular fishmongers: Aptus Seafoods, Gem Pier and South Melbourne Seafoods. Customers are now encouraged to bring reusable containers and access complimentary soy sauce stations.

"South Melbourne Market is renowned for its incredible fresh seafood offering, and this initiative shows that even the smallest changes can have a meaningful impact. It's about protecting our Bay, reducing waste and ensuring the Market remains a vibrant destination for future generations," says City of Port Phillip mayor, Cr Alex Makin.

This latest initiative is part of a wider move towards implementing sustainable practices. The Shuck Don't Chuck program, operated in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, recycles oyster, mussel, and scallop shells to restore lost reef ecosystems. To date, the broader program has restored over 12 hectares of reef.

Ditching the soy sauce fish forms part of the market's Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2023-2027, which has set ambitious targets to reduce single-use plastic packaging types by 60%, divert 85% of waste from landfill by 2027, and ensure all consumer packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable.
