Overview
The iconic restaurant strip of Lygon Street continues to broaden its multicultural horizons, with the arrival of new addition, La Cabra. Launched this week, the boldly-hued modern Mexican eatery is the fourth outpost for the brand, joining a stable that includes venues in Hampton, Hawthorn and St Kilda.
Like its siblings, the Carlton newcomer is rocking a playful fitout bursting with bright pops of colour. La Cabra's neon logo of a horned goat's head — a self-assured reference to G.O.A.T — gazes down from one wall.
The menu is a contemporary, Melbourne ode to the familiar Mexican classics. Kick things off with the likes of Tajin-spiced calamari, stuffed jalapenos, and crisp hand-cut tortillas loaded with the usual nacho suspects.
A seven-strong taco lineup showcases considered fillings like fried fish teamed with jalapeno salsa and papaya slaw; and a cactus number with feta, beans and salsa verde. Burritos feature ingredients like chimichurri pulled lamb, slow-cooked brisket and some not-so-Mexican falafel; plus you'll find a solid offering of fajitas, enchiladas and burgers.
The matching booze list is suitably festive, with multiple margarita styles, an approachable tequila selection and share-friendly cocktail jugs aplenty. Try a carafe of There's Something About Mary — made on Four Pillars, rosemary and blood orange — or level-up your Monday with $10 margs from 5pm.
For those who prefer their boozy weekend brunching with a Mexican twist, La Cabra's also serving up a bottomless brunch situation every Saturday and Sunday, at 12pm and 2pm. $69 per person will get you a parade of bites including tacos, quesadillas and churros, along with 90 minutes of unlimited refills on your choice of drink.
La Cabra Carlton is celebrating its grand opening from Tuesday, May 10–Thursday, May 12, slinging $4 tacos and $2 Coronas for all.
Find La Cabra's new outpost at 149 Lygon Street, Carlton. It's open daily from 11am–late.
