You have to know the past to understand the present, or so the wisdom goes. Where better to get fascinating insight than the Australian Heritage Festival (Victoria) — a statewide celebration of diverse and vibrant heritage. Running until Sunday, May 18, over 300 free and ticketed events delve into the people, places and cultures that have shaped the state's story. In 2025, this expansive showcase centres on the theme Unearthed, where lesser-known histories and stories are brought into the light to empower visitors with knowledge that makes them better custodians of culture and traditions. Exploring migrant and queer communities, as well as the lasting legacy of women who helped build and shape our cities and towns, expect an incredible month-long program filled with walking tours, exhibitions, workshops, family-friendly experiences and more. There's no shortage of highlights, but some of the best include Campbells Creek's The Alchemy of Gold forum, held Friday, May 16–Sunday, May 18. Examining how the 1850s gold rush transformed Victoria, historians, experts and community members offer their perspective on this profound event's lasting impact. In Bendigo on Saturday, May 17, families will love The Heritage Fiesta, where you're welcome to explore iconic local landmarks for free, including the Central Deborah Gold Mine, Bendigo Tramways and the Bendigo Joss House Temple. Meanwhile, special heritage tours presented at Melbourne's Trades Hall will reveal the stories behind labour movement icons such as John Curtin, Zelda D'Aprano and Bob Hawke. With literally hundreds more events on the schedule, delve into the full program and see what you can learn from history.
