Neil and Sam Perry continue to revolutionise Double Bay, with their latest venture, Pizzeria Sotto, bringing a relaxed offering to the shimmering suburb. Housed in the former Bar Torino basement site below Gran Torino, the casual, neighbourhood-focused eatery serves Roman-style thin-crust pizza, great drinks, and easygoing vibes. "Pizzeria Sotto is best described as Gran Torino's little sister, where we source the best ingredients and then cook and serve them in a way that presents them at their best, but in a style that's casual, accessible, and fun," says Perry. Ease in with snacky antipasti such as tuna crudo with grilled citrus, prawn salad with roast tomatoes and chickpeas, and Palermo-style caponata. Then, move on to the hero pizzas with an elevated base of Italian tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, Sicilian oregano, and Cobram Estate olive oil. "The food is a blend of a great Roman pizzeria with a neighbourhood trattoria. Our pizzas are made in the Roman style, which features a thin and crispy base, are lighter to eat, and allow the toppings to shine," says Perry. Speaking of toppings, expect forest mushrooms slathered in roast garlic, marjoram and taleggio; King Prawns with mozzarella and pesto genovese; nduja with hot salami and fermented chilli; and pork sausage with rapini and pecorino. You'll also find Daily Extra specials on the menu. Each day of the week features a different main dish, ranging from Roman-style veal pot roast with soft polenta to Ligurian seafood stew with grilled ciabatta and porchetta with salsa verde. Round out your meal with classic Italian desserts, such as tiramisu, gelato, or bomboloni. "For us, Sotto feels just right, and we think this will be a place people can drop into during the week with family and friends. Casual, generous, and built around the kind of food and atmosphere that keeps people coming back," says Perry. Images: Parker Blain. Like what you see?
