Overview

The Meat & Wine Co has opened a new flagship restaurant on Collins Street, bringing its signature chargrilled meats, carefully curated wine program, and distinctive Afro-centric dining experience to the CBD. The new venue marks the brand's fifth Melbourne outpost and 14th restaurant nationally.

The new restaurant continues the brand's focus on premium steak and sources quality produce from leading Australian suppliers. You'll find grass-fed beef, wagyu, and premium aged cuts, including dry-aged and butter-aged, all cooked over the brand's proprietary high-temperature grill, elevated by its renowned 35-year-old signature basting.

While chargrilled steak is certainly the focus, it's not the only thing coming out of the kitchen. The menu also features wagyu tartare, blackcurrant kangaroo skewers, boerewors sausage, flame-kissed ribs, and smoky Portuguese chicken. You know a restaurant takes its steak seriously when the menu explains meat temperatures from blue to well-done, and features an extensive range of interesting sauces such as hot African chilli, blue cheese, biltong butter, and veal jus.

For those with less-carnivorous inclinations, there's a respectable selection of alternatives, whether you go for bruschetta or baked scallops, tuna sashimi or Szechuan calamari. The menu also includes Moroccan salmon with sriracha glaze and a tasty list of sides, from truffle mac and cheese to a wedge salad, a Brussels sprout bake, and Hasselback potatoes.

And while you'll likely be focused on the hefty piece of meat on your plate, don't forget to look up to take in the immersive African Sky design concept, inspired by the African Savannah. The dramatic fit-out, designed by international studio COOOP.co, features theatrical lighting and sculptural draping that transforms throughout the day.

"The African Sky concept is about capturing a feeling rather than recreating a place. We looked at the way light moves across landscapes, the transition between day and night, and the sense of warmth and connection this creates," says COOOP.co Australia principal and creative director Callie van der Merwe.
