This Just In: Vinted, the European resale juggernaut Australians have been waiting for, lands here on 1 July

Vinted, one of Europe's largest second-hand shopping platforms, is officially launching in Australia on 1 July. From day one, Australians will be able to download the app, list their own pieces and start digging through other people's wardrobes from across the country.

From that date the app is free to download, and you'll be able to create listings, browse and buy from sellers around the country. The rollout is backed by a three-year partnership with Australia Post, which will handle every delivery — so once something sells, the app generates a prepaid shipping label and you drop the parcel at your nearest post office or parcel locker.

Founded in Lithuania in 2008, Vinted is a peer-to-peer marketplace: buyers and sellers deal directly with one another, with no middle-man storefront taking a cut. You photograph and upload an item, set your own price and message buyers inside the app. Payments are handled through the platform, and every purchase is covered by Vinted's Buyer Protection program — which means a refund may be on the table if an item is lost, damaged in transit or turns up looking nothing like its listing.

Unlike most resale platforms — and unlike the Depops and eBays many of us already use — Vinted charges sellers no listing or selling fees, so you keep the full amount each sale earns. The cost sits with the buyer instead, in the form of a Buyer Protection fee that covers customer support and transaction security.

The launch sees an opening of an international corridor between Australia and the United Kingdom, letting members shop UK wardrobes and sell into them without wrangling customs themselves. There are limits: parcels moving between the two countries need to weigh 2 kilograms or less, items sent from Australia to the UK must be worth under £110, and items heading the other way must be worth under A$920 (all before Buyer Protection, shipping and tax). Whether the corridor widens to other markets, Vinted hasn't yet said.
