Sydney has no shortage of unusual places to eat, but a dinner table that turns into a moving canvas is a fairly different proposition. Since Friday, July 31, 7 Paintings at Solander Dining and Bar located at West Hotel Sydney, Curio Collection by Hilton has been bringing seven works of art to life across a 2.5-hour dinner show, combining 3D projection mapping, live performance, music and, naturally, seven courses. The experience is running exclusively at Solander Dining and Bar. Across seven acts, diners travel through the artistic worlds of Michelangelo, Banksy, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí and Vincent van Gogh, with each artist getting their own projected artwork and accompanying course. Rather than keeping the art confined to the walls, 7 Paintings projects its imagery directly onto the dining table. Colours, shapes and moving scenes become part of the meal as each act unfolds, with themed music and interactive elements helping bring the different artists and their work into the room. There's also a little audience participation along the way. Painting and riddles form part of the experience, adding a playful element to an evening that sits somewhere between dinner, theatre and an art exhibition — although the exact details are best discovered at the table. Dinner, meanwhile, follows the same seven-part journey. The menu has been created around each artist, beginning with a Michelangelo-inspired course before moving through dishes influenced by Banksy, Picasso, Pollock and Warhol, then finishing with desserts inspired by Dalí and Van Gogh. The evening starts with tomato praline, basil gel and watercress in shell crostini before moving through veal carpaccio, Spanish-inspired flavours and Pollock's vegetable painting. Warhol gets grilled fillet of beef with sweet potato mash and glazed sugar snap peas. Dalí's surrealist-inspired course combines burnt wattleseed crema, crisp kumara, berries, brownie crumbs and salted caramel ice cream. Van Gogh then rounds things out with a chocolate painting served with coconut meringue. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and children's menus are also available. Thursday sittings start at 7pm, while Friday and Saturday shows take place at 5pm and 8.30pm, with 20 seats available per dinner. The Classic Menu costs $179, while the Vegetarian Menu is $169. 7 Paintings is currently running at Solander Dining and Bar, West Hotel Sydney, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
